The mayor of Chicago Brandon Johnson was accused of not documenting the gifts of designers properly while preventing access to the city hall “gift room”, according to a report issued by the office of the Chicago city inspector (OIG).
Oig issued the report on Wednesday, accusing the Chicago mayor’s office for accepting gifts, including Hugo Boss Cuffs Links, Montalink Personal Perciles, the American National Football Team shirt 2023, the Gucci Bag, the Kate Spade Red Red Red, and Carrucci Size 14 Shoes shoes . From February 2, 2022, until March 20, 2024.
The report indicates that approximately 70 % of the 380 gifts recorded from February 2, 2022 to March 20, 2024, the donor identity is not included.

While waiting, Oig talked to the senior members of the mayor’s office regarding the request, then made a written request to reach the room.
After more delay, the mayor’s office said he spoke to the lawyer, who said Oig would not grant access to the gift room that day. The report said that to reach the room, it was told that he would have to make an appointment.

Johnson told reporters at a press conference on Wednesday, the Oig report was a misunderstanding of what happened.
“These are gifts for the city. It has been recorded,” Johnson told reporters. “The description of how this report appears misleading, and again, we will make sure that our team allows you to reach you so that you can see the gifts that are presented to the city.”
The mayor said that there is a process that everyone should go through, adding that no one is above the law, not even Oig.
As for gifts, Johnson said that there are times that will go to a societal job and get a gift bag as a symbol of appreciation.

Johnson said: “I do not want people to think that there is space in the city’s government where there is a wall full of belts, socks, shoes and luxury hats,” noting that he has already received hats.
“With all due respect, I sometimes think people are chasing the wall without anything. There is a record. It is there. There were years.”
Johnson also said he had not seen the gift room that Oig referred to.
“I don’t think there is a room, (but) if people want a tour of this room, I will register because I did not go to it myself,” he said.
