This is not the first time that Petro administration has found itself in turbulent waters.
His presidency has been numbered through prominent political crises, local and international.
For example, his communication with Venezuela and Cuba as mediators in the peace process in Colombia has fueled doubts between the most conservative sectors.
Meanwhile, he struggled with his ambitious local agenda, including overwhelming healthcare reforms, pensions and employment, in order to obtain traction amid barriers on legislative roads and opposition resistance.
His government also faced repeated instability through a series of changes in the cabinet and internal conflicts. The allegations of corruption surrounding Ibn Petro and financing his 2022 presidential campaign have increased confidence.
However, for some Petro supporters, his last clash with Trump symbolizes his challenging position against the pressure of the United States and his commitment to protecting the Colombian dignity.
His base – which consists of progressive voters, and human rights advocates and sectors disappointed by the approach to interference in Washington – sees the resistance of Trump’s strict policies as a confirmation of national sovereignty.
“I thought what he did was good. He did not send me from him. I supported him,” said Robinson Duarti, an economist who voted for Petro in 2022.
Trump’s threat to definitions and penalties, although they are currently avoided, have raised concerns about possible economic repercussions. This can harm the candidates align Petro in 2026, especially if economic concerns continue.
However, experts say that Petro flexibility in political crises should not be underestimated. His ability to convert the moments of confrontation into popular crowd points was a distinctive advantage in his career.
If Trump’s spitting as a position against foreign aggression, he can strengthen his alliance before the 2026 elections.
“He has also been able to put himself as a person who has the ability to tell (the United States) that this is an independent country, and we have dignity and we must understand each other in the context of international law.”
“Just because it is Trump or the most influential person in the world, we will not bend in the United States’ way to do politics.”
