Romanian President Klaus Euhanis resigned after pressing him to step down before restarting the presidential elections that were controversial last year.
December vote was canceled by the Romanian Supreme Court after allegations of the Russian state intervention.
The outgoing Iohannis, a liberal in support of the European Union, said that he will remain in office until a successor was elected in May.
But this was subjected to strong criticism by advanced right -wing politicians and their supporters, who were good in the first round of voting in December.
They criticized tens of thousands of Romanians to go to the streets last month in protest against the cancellation of the elections.
The opposition lawmakers launched a proposal in Parliament again on Monday to move to suspend the president.
In response, Iyhanis said that he would step down, in an attempt to limit what he said would be “harm” and homosexuals to the country.
“In order to spare Romania and the Romanian citizens from a crisis … resigned from the office of the President of Romania,” he said. He said he would stop officially on Wednesday.
