Hadi Mattar, 26, is accused of stabbing the elderly writer over and over during a lecture in 2022.
The trial of a man who attacked the British Indian author, Salman Rushdie, was attacked two years ago on charges of attempting to kill in the United States.
The jury is scheduled to start on Tuesday to trial Hadi Mattar, who repeatedly appealed the 77 -year -old novelist in the face, neck and abdomen during a public lecture in New York State in August 2022. The process may be difficult, as the global environment helps to promote “bias “Against Islam.
The attack on Rushdie, who had previously had a target of death threats on his writings on Islam, led to the loss of his right eye and the damage to the liver, among other injuries.
Mattar, 26, acknowledged that he was not guilty of the charge of attempted second -class killing and a second -class attack on the attack at the Chutawukua Institute in West New York.
The trial was delayed twice, the last of which was after his lawyer tried to no avail to move it to a different place, saying that Mattar was unable to obtain a fair trial in Chauteauqua. He rejected the approval of 20 years acknowledgment.
If he is convicted of an attempt to kill, Mattar faces a prison sentence for up to 25 years. However, the dual citizen in the United States and Lebanon also faces federal charges accusing him of terrorism and providing material support to the Lebanese group backed by Hezbollah, which helps the United States “a terrorist organization.”
Public prosecutors in the federal case argue that the alleged Mattar attack was not random, but rather by the Fatus, or a death threat, issued by Iran’s leadership against Rushdie over the author’s account in 1988 The Satanic Assas, which many Muslims consider blasphemy.
After the attack, the suspect told the media that he had traveled from his home in New Jersey after seeing Rushdie’s event, which was announced because he did not like the novelist, saying that Rushdie attacked Islam.
Rashidi will be among the first witnesses to testify in the trial. Since the attack, the author posted notes and said in the interviews he believed he would die on the stage.
I grew up in a Muslim Kashmiri family, and the writer who won many of the winners was forced in a contract of hiding in 1989 when he called Ayatollah Roh Allah Khomeini, the supreme leader of Iran, to kill him.
This sparked a storm of protest all over the western world to support freedom of expression. The Iranian government said in 1998 that it no longer supports fatwas, and Rushdie ended his years as a restoration.
The prosecutors in the trial said that the jurors are likely to not hear about the Fatwa, saying that providing a motive is not necessary since many witnessed and recorded a video by many audiences.
Instead, they talked about the challenge they would face in choosing a fair and fair jury due to the level of propaganda surrounding the accident.
Mattar’s lawyer said that he fears the current global turmoil who could have a negative impact, pointing to concerns about “inherent and implicit bias” towards Arab Americans and Arab American society in Chotukua Province.
With tensions on religious violence that extends to a rise, the judge in the case has ordered both sides to avoid data to the media.
