Your guide to what the American elections mean 2024 for Washington and the world
Donald Trump has imposed sanctions on international criminal court officials who are investigating in the United States and its allies such as Israel, and re -introducing a policy from his first term.
In an executive order signed on Thursday, the US President developed financial penalties and banning visas for the international criminal court staff and their families, in a move coincided with the visit of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Washington. It also applies to officials who are investigating American citizens.
The White House did not immediately mention the officials who were punished.
The matter says that the court poses a threat to the “sovereignty” of the United States, which “undermines critical national security and foreign policy” and allies like Israel.
The international criminal court staff “officials” for the “abuses” of the court can freeze their assets and can be prevented and their families from entering the United States.
In November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest orders in favor of Netanyahu and his minister at the time, Yov Galet, “for crimes against humanity and war crimes.”
The move was a dramatic escalation of legal measures on the Israeli attack in Gaza-which killed about 47,000 people, according to Palestinian officials-and the first time the International Criminal Court was issued a prominent matter for a Western principal leader.
The court also issued a memorandum of the then Hamas leader, Muhammad Dave, for crimes against humanity and war crimes over the group’s attack on October 7, 2023 on Israel, which sparked the conflict in Gaza.
“With the issuance of arrest orders for Israeli officials and Hamas officials at the same time, the International Criminal Court has created a shameful moral equation.”
“The recent measures against Israel and the United States have developed a dangerous precedent,” Trump said, “The recent measures against Israel and the United States have set a dangerous precedent,” and that Washington “is unambiguously opposed and expects our allies to oppose any ICC measures” against the United States or Israel.
Neither the United States nor Israel, members of court, or recognize its authority.
The International Criminal Court did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The orders of Israeli officials obligated the member states of the International Criminal Court – which include most of the countries of European America and Latin America, as well as some in Asia and Africa – detention on Netanyahu and Callant if they cross their borders, although the court has no enforcement mechanism.
The White House condemned Joe Biden orders when they were released. France, a member of the International Criminal Court and the US ally, said in November that Netanyahu may have immunity from arrest because Israel was not signed on the Rome Law, which established the court.
The independent court is in the Netherlands, and was founded in 2002 to try the perpetrators of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.
Trump also took measures against the International Criminal Court officials in 2020, authorizing the freezing of assets and banning members of their families from coming to the United States after the court began investigating the alleged US measures in Afghanistan.
