Five of the Thai citizens who took enthusiasm for more than a year returned to Thailand on Sunday, where they did not reunite them with their tear families at Bangkok Sofnabumi Airport.
The returnees, who wear winter jackets, were met with emotional embrace of their families.
“We were all deeply affected by returning to our hometown … to stand here,” said Bongsak Theina, one of the returnees. “I don’t know what to say, we are all really grateful.”
According to the Israeli authorities, Hamas militants kidnapped at least 240 people, including Israelis and foreign citizens, in an attack in October 2023 in southern Israel. During the attack, Hamas gunmen killed 41 Chase and kidnapped 30 Thai workers. Later that year, the first group of Thai hostages was returned.
Thai Secretary of State Maris Sanjamepongsa, who accompanied the hostages from Israel, expressed her satisfaction with their return. “This is emotional … to return to the embrace of their families,” he said. “We never surrendered and this was the fruits of that.”
Before the conflict, nearly 30,000 Thai citizens worked in the Israeli agricultural sector, making them one of the largest migrant workers groups in the country. Nearly 9000 Tais was returned their homeland after the attack.
Workers come primarily from the northeastern region of Thailand, a region that includes villages and agricultural societies that are among the poorest of the country.
Thailand Foreign Ministry said that the Thai citizen is still believed to be held by Hamas.
“We still have hope and continue to work to return them,” Maris said, adding that this includes the bodies of two deceased Thai citizens.
